The sources of noise are much the same have they have always been, but there seems to be more of them and the noise is less confined. As a result more noisy activities and development rubs shoulders with people who are trying to work, rest or sleep.

Elevated levels of noise in our environment forms an ever increasing threat to our comfort and well being. A recent report entitled, The Non-Auditory Effects of Noise*, suggests that not only is there strong evidence for the effects of environmental noise on sleep disturbance, types of heart disease and performance of school children, but there is also, 'inconclusive data', on low birth weight and psychiatric disorders.
